I like mentions. It makes sure that the person you want to engage with gets the message and knows they are wanted. 

I use them in other roleplays, but I'm never sure with using them in ones that I am not a GM in or don't know everyone well enough to use them, as it can be seen as pushy. 

I'm more then willing to use them
