Due to recent events in Poland, I have to canceled leave for any United States military personnel stationed in West Germany and West Berlin. All branches of service stationed in the area have been put on high-alert. The Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of Defense Marshall will monitor the situation in Poland as it progresses. This move is done for potential defensive purposes only. Prime Minister Atlee has agreed to do the same with the British troops stationed in West Germany. I have not heard from President Auriol yet, but I encourage the French Republic to follow suit with the rest of the Western Allies of Germany and watch towards the east with a cautious eye, and a defensive mind. -- Harry Truman
