In classical mythology, Demeter worked to maintain the harvest and most forms of life, and her myriad underlings worked to maintain the weather and environment to facilitate Demeter's work. It's why, when Persephone was kidnapped and Demeter fell into a massive slump that stopped her up entirely, the mortals suffered through droughts, winters, and plagues. It's also why the seasons exist.
