I found one rather elaborate looking source that claims the outfit was [url=http://sharpecompendium.net/uniforms.html]'aping the cavalry style which was in fashion at the time'[/url], which, if true, explains why it looks like a Hussar uniform (at least, to my untrained plebeian eyes). I'm no Napoleonic Wars veteran, however, so I guess I can't claim anything solid.
