[@Akayaofthemoon]I doubt their born this way, as that theory seems a bit off to me, but moving on from that, I had my own ideas for how corruption could occur. What if a gem is cracked and something infects the gem while they're weakened, a virus of some sort. The change could completely rewrite who they were before, thus going with Akaya's explanation, making them into the mostly mindless creatures we see, with but the slightest hint of sanity and rememberance left.
