He holds his smile but Alex will see its fraud. He is intimidated. While he might not fear her physically as Alex will pick up on his sense of indestructibility, he fears what she may find. He throws up crude surface thoughts, if Alex is actually looking in his head she will see a lot of herself, if she is good she will feel his fear of the past being re-awoken.

"Where's the fun in that!?" He ask with a feigned laugh as he juggles between his cigarette and bottle, taking a deep swig as an excuse to break eye contact. As mesmerising as her eyes were he couldn't let himself get caught in them.
