The life of a boyhood slave is no light matter, in particular when still bound to the same state that shackled him to begin with. This story needs more "heroic" heroes, at least in the sense of good, as there's plenty shades of everything in between.

"That notion never occurred to me."

Yeah, he's like Asami Sato from Legend of Korra in that way, suffering [i]a lot[/i], but believably never turning evil.
