Personality: He likes learning how the world works, especially machines.  He also likes explosions.  In the military, his two interests mesh well.

History: The first time he saw an alchemist he was 10 and his uncle was using alchemy to fix a broken wagon.  When James realized how expensive it would have been to fix the wagon without alchemy, and how much he could help people if he had that ability, and how rich he could become, he asked his uncle to teach him.  For the next several years his uncle taught him the basics of alchemy whenever he was home from one of his business trips until his uncle brought some good news home.  He had been accepted as a state alchemist.  He gave all of his books to James, who by this time was making a living by using alchemy to fix things for people in town, and James continued to learn.  When word reached them that his uncle had died in the Ishbalan uprising when a building collapsed on him, James decided to join the military as an alchemist to carry on his uncle's memory.  During his test he created a working gun with bullets in it, and his instructors were impressed enough to let him join.

Main form of combat: Mechanical Weapons, Guns (Can transmute them from the ground, a revolver in a pinch or a rifle (M1 like) if he has time.)

Equipment: Research Journal, gloves with a symbol for purifying minerals from the ground, chalk, pages with various alchemical symbols on them for emergencies, silver pocket watch
