The only things necessary to start off are knowledge of the basic combat rp rules, which can be found [url=http://www.roleplaygateway.com/type-turn-based-combat-eden-era-t4212.html]here[/url], and a character sheet with a good amount of detail - you can look [url=http://www.roleplayerguild.com/topics/79678-rpguild-ranking-headquarters/char]here[/url] for some examples. The rest can be picked up along the way.

EDIT: it's also a good idea to have a healthy amount of detail in your own posts: stance, direction of your attacks and the like, since it is key to convey the image you have in your own mind to your partner.
