Joseph began a search to find out what really happened to Speedwagon when he encountered, Straizo, an old family friend turned evil vampire. After a long chase and eventual battle, Joseph was informed of Speedwagons location before Straizo committed suicide. Joseph travelled to Mexico, where he discovers Speedwagon being held captive in a secret nazi bunker. Joseph fails to stop the nazi's from awakening the first pillar man, Santana but defeats Santana with the help of the nazi officer, Stroheim who is mortally wounded in the process. Joseph later meets the hamon user, Caeser Zeppeli who teaches him more about hamon and later has a small fight with three more pillar men, Kars, Esidisi and Wamuu. After talking them out of killing him, Caeser takes Joseph to meet his master, Lisa Lisa, who teaches them both much more about hamon. Before his training was complete, Joseph fought and defeated Esidisi. Eventually the group travelled to Switzerland, where they met a cyborg Stroheim. After a small argument, Caeser stormed off to fight Wamuu alone. He wounds Wamuu but the fight ultimately results in his death. Joseph later fought and defeated Wamuu at a chariot race battle, before having a long and drawn out fight with Kars which resulted in Joseph's presumed death and Kars being blown into space.
