I like the artifact idea, though. Perhaps the artifact IS the pendant, given it seems to be a key part of Chrono Trigger? Plus, other than the teleporter freaking out, all the time travel until the Epoch is through Time Gates. I agree with the statement on canon PCs. They would make the story too akin to the original. Perhaps the artifact simply causes a time gate to appear and afterward above rule from my first post of this double post would apply.
