I was thinking something akin to Gaara's ability to control sand, but of course not to that extent, and rather than sand, it would be an element. Given the fact that we'd be playing genin characters, it would be very limited and undeveloped. 

To sum it up, a character who uses ranged elemental attacks of a single element and lacks majorly in melee combat.
