Are classes* not times for characters to be playing off one another? Having an assignment in Armory class is not meant to be the only thing people can do; it's meant to provide that realistic backdrop for players to interact with one another and further their own personal stories. *I've skipped path Math both times. Me skipping a class means that you're not obligated to write about it. Sure, Math lasted a little longer than usual this time, but it was because of an event I created which in turn allowed those personal interactions. If you ask me, Math and History have never been part of the equation because I've never required anyone to post specifically about anything happening in those classes. My terminology doesn't apply to people who don't want to write about Math: that's everyone. That means the 'boring classes' we have are the ones we don't skip: Grimm Studies, Armory, Survival, Practice, and so forth. I've hit a dilemma. If I have one of those classes run then I disenfranchise people who think it's boring. If I skip one then it upsets people who wanted to use that time for interactions. In these classes I give some things for the characters to do, but they're free to go beyond that. We can all agree that me serving a ball and telling people to hit it, and then watching them hit it, would be boring. So which would be better: me serving a ball in the background and leaving people to hit it in their own way and do whatever else they want, or me setting up personal, individualized situations for every character to fulfill in the mean time? Do I give the players the power to perform their own character development and depth, or do I hand it to them? If character development and depth aren't the player's responsibility, I must confess I don't think I have the capability to do it for everyone. I made a mistake saying that 'wanting' didn't factor into it, and for that I apologize. I didn't know what I was saying. In general, I manage to do a pretty good job of not seeming like a complete idiot, but sometimes I slip up. The dilemma is moot now though. If it makes any difference, this was the last time I was going to do the class routine. We're even skipping the rest of this time's classes so I don't have to subject any more boring to people. Though I wanted to perhaps approach it a little more organically, it makes sense that we would timeskip around like crazy in order to get to the interesting things. What seems like a workable solution to me is to restructure the RP to eliminate boring circumstances. There will be opportunities for intracharacter interaction aplenty during more interesting events to replace whatever we'll be losing out on by stopping all normal classes. No matter how senseless cutting out the classroom learning would be given the setting, it must be done if people aren't enjoying it. We've done enough classes by now to establish the 'school' aspect of Beacon; it's about time we started having fun with the 'combat' aspect. My previous plan, even keeping in mind what I've said about Math & History, can't continue.
