You don't need to describe the history of it. Remember that this is basically from the view of cameras: they record what the five senses can perceive (extremely accurately), but not thoughts. They don't give a narrative; they objectively say what's there. They don't say why; they objectively say what's there. =P So you don't need to say "ashes of dead creatures" because when you look right at the ashes, they just look like ashes. You shouldn't say "influenced by the sword shard's evil properties" because you don't know that when you first look at them.
