That said, the Ottoman Turks did occupy Greece for years without making a dent in their culture. And then the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain, or the Scots under English rule. Maybe the reason there was a revolt was because they felt native culture was trying to be swept away.

That is true, we could just as easily come up with something similar to how a lot of the Greeks, Armenians (Until they where mass Murdered), and other cultures in the Balkans never became Turks under the Ottoman Empire.
