As long as the design is capable of properly concentrating the effect along the cage, the electronics inside should be safe. Reason why I see people 'foiling' the interior of houses sometimes. Think in terms of similar to a lightning rod for the cage, and a lightning strike as the cage. However, a lightning rod will not affect an EMP, so don't confuse this example with reality~!
