I feel like he wouldn't, or at the very least not out of sadness. He would almost as if it's fitting for an old tree to give back to the world, and in doing so plant another tree that would grow in its place. I did try to address this idea somewhat in my post, while the entire idea of a woodcutter loving trees is hilarious it also deals with this level of respect. A tree that he doesn't need to cut he will leave be, as it has it's own role to play in the world. Or at the very least that's what I generally thought of so far.
