Because the then-modern religious establishment had branded Samaritans in particular as impure, worthy of systematic hatred and discrimination, and Jesus was actually pretty not-okay with all that. He hung out with whores and lowlifes, too. It's obviously a bit presumptuous of me to say 'THAT MEANS GOD THINKS GAY PEOPLE ARE AWESOME,' but I choose to believe that if the second coming happened tonight, some of your modern religious leaders might be just as shocked at the outcome as the pharisees were. And I could give some more bible on that point if anybody's interested, but I don't think anybody is.
