I would suggest a South American country, like Argentina or something.
All you really need to know is the history of the country of your choosing at the time, and a more general overview of what happened over the century (i.e important wars, important diplomatic events, coups, change in leadership etc.)
Then you get on with making sure that all the bad things you know happened, don't happen :P
