Switching sides? Yes, of course. Could be an interesting plot point.

Oh - I have no explanation for that. I [s]blatantly ripped off[/s] [i]borrowed liberally[/i] from the old RP, with a few twists of my own added in. That was one of the things that got carried over.
Although, it could also be possible that the King is a big fan of Agnatic-Cognatic Ultimogeniture.
