We could say that it was something like a Star Trek hologram, where you can make things that appear solid, but the only real trick you can do with them is to make sound/ light flashes and to move them. Kind of like the Lantern constructs, but full color and without energy beam attacks. Also, because you studied weapons you know exactly how they work, so you can make them, but not things like computers which you don't understand the workings of. Just a thought, though. The trauma could be that you were caught without a weapon when you really needed one. Depending on your character's back story, it could be in a fight, when arresting a drug dealer, when being mugged, or something else.
The weapon is something I had the idea for a little while again. It was originally part of a character called Nine, who could create essentially create a copy of any weapon he could think of. Providing he understood the basic functions of said weapon and could imagine using such a thing in combat, he would be able to manifest a physical copy of it and use it like the real thing. As for the psychology, I'll have to think about it... I'm still pretty stuck ^_^
