November 7th-14th With approval from Kalpian High Command, the Kalpian 3rd Army begins to head south, bent on capturing the Kamenese capital. The troops first had to move through the great desert of Fallasi, and the 3rd Army's logistics became imminently strained, still General Von Barlath and his troops continued south. They did not have to go far to find the Kamenese Army. Battle of Fallasi Prelude: With the invasion of Kamen, the Kalpians attacked from both the north as well as the south, though it was Von Barlath's 3rd Army that ran rampant in the north. With permission from Kalpian High Command to link the northern and southern assaults, Von Barlath took to marching formation and started south through the Fallasi Desert. He was unaware that the Kamenese Army was waiting for him there. On November 8th, the 3rd Army scouts reported huge formations of Kamenese troops converging around them. Von Barlath ordered his troops on the offensive. Battle: The 3rd Army was 97,000 men strong, but unaware that they had come across a Kamenese force over 200,000 strong. They attacked from the south and the east, running headlong into dissembling Kalpian formations. Von Barlath, an astute attacker, formulated his attacks on the southeast axis, emphasizing neither flank while placing his troops in a position to reinforce wherever needed. The battle would last nearly a week. On November 9th, the Kalpians assaulted Kamenese camps in the east, but ran into positions brimming with Survaek Ishui Model 11 machine guns. The attack, led by 48th Infantry Division was repulsed after four hours of fighting. The next day saw two Kamenese offenses from the south, numbering over 60,000 troops assaulted the Kalpian lines, only to be met with heavy casualties and pushed back. Three more days of intense pushes by both side saw over 150,000 casualties and no clear victory. General Von Barlath wrote in his November 10th report that many of his machine gunners were running afoul of their machines, with 25% of all FT-18 Mark I's jamming during combat operations due to weather and heavy use. On November 14th, during dawn, the Kamenese Army assaulted directly along the coast with 25,000 cavalry, an outdated tactic long dismissed in Varius. The attack broke the Kalpian lines and fighting became hand to hand for several hours until the 52nd Infantry Division was moved in and filled the gap.
Kalpian Gubeat 12.5cm guns during the Battle of Fallasi
Aftermath: The Kamenese halted the Kalpian advance, though at great coast. Having lost over 100,000 soldiers, many of whom needlessly tossed their lives away in bare handed assaults, they showed their resolve to an enemy that had previously been seen as unstoppable. The man who killed President Poullain is Jacques de Saad, a Salardian ultra nationalist, but more interesting is that preliminary newspaper agencies in Soroya and Deltora report that Jacques de Saad had spent the last two decades living in Foedinei, in the Grand Survaek Empire. He is jailed almost immediately by Marshal Henri de Savoi, who proclaims marshal law in the newly established Grand Duchy of Salardia.
