There are no unbiased studies (at least that I or anyone with actual knowledge on the subject I've ever heard talk about it have seen) that back up your claim that it's "immediate, powerful, and generally irreversible" unless you take it at a young age like 11 or 13. At 16 it causes some problems, and after development it's negligible if there at all.
