Appearance Yan stands about a head shorter than most men and has a scrawny physique that suggests he is malnourished to a degree. Along with his pale skin and the notably dark circles around his sunken-in eyes, Yan more or less looks constantly ill. His fingernails are caked with layers of black grime, and his teeth are brittle and stained. Yan wears a waterproof jumpsuit tucked into boots, and avoids combing his hair or performing self-grooming of any kind. Yan is known for his habit of constantly smiling, which most people find either unnerving or endearing. Personality If Yan were an animal, he would be a rat. Although he's not exceptionally smart, Yan possesses a fair degree of low cunning and street smarts, and can be sly when he needs to be. Yan is selfish and crude, and is known (by those who even know him) as an underhanded deviant who can't be trusted. Yan's sole motivation for staying alive is Zen, a psychoactive street drug named for its lethargic hallucinatory highs. Known for being an especially trashy street-drug, "Zen-Men" like Yan are stereotypically thieves or beggars -- Yan is both. Yan is a skilled liar and can typically talk his way out of most situations, or bluff his way into them, especially if Zen -- or money to buy more Zen -- is involved. Yan's life on the streets has taught him to look out for himself above all else, jading him into a self-centered cynic. History Yan was born in the Lower Ring, to an unexceptionally poor family and unexceptionally poor life. Introduced to Zen at an early age, Yan has known little else but poverty and addiction, which have become second-nature to him -- Yan sometimes has trouble figuring out whether or not he's sober, as he's spent the majority of his life either high or coming down. Eventually outed as an addict, Yan was kicked out of his house after stealing money from his parents to support his habit as a teenager. With a natural penchant for small crime, he has since kept himself alive through burglary and mugging pedestrians, though more often than not he settles for begging. He is a fairly successful addict, as he manages to eat enough to stay alive, and avoids law enforcement by having a permanent hideout rather than carrying his belongings with him. He has made himself a nest at the highest floor of one of the lower ring's many abandoned buildings.
