Stratholme was once a former stronghold of humankind, but now it is a place of despair and death after its destruction by Arthas in a campaign against Mal'Ganis. The fires that were started so long ago that were used to purge all undead and the plague itself from the city failed, leaving a burning husk full of scourge in its destructive wake, seemingly forever lost to the evil that has now taken hold of the once beautiful city. 

Among the hordes of Scourge that wander freely, the Scarlet Crusade has taken up habitation and cleaned out one area of the city, but at the same time purging all they consider impure with fire and torture.

Two hostile factions, evil and corrupt in their own way reign over the city, to enter would most certainly be death or something much worse. One may ask themselves, after all those who have been inside of Stratholme, after so many have been killed inside of that city, where are all the undead coming from? The truth is that somewhere inside of the city lays the portal to Naxxramas, The Dread Citadel itself. To stop the flow, one would have to destroy the connection between the two, and to this day none have found that connection, the portal that remains open.
