Same reason you can navigate a dark room after a few seconds, even if it was perfectly lit before. You might not be able to see detail, but discerning your surroundings is easy peasy.

And light from a lit room through a doorway is a lot more light than my bedroom when I turn the light out. And contains fewer things trying to kill me.

I really need to clear my floor of tripping hazards.
