"Let's make an epic battle where everyone dies . . . and then make it all actually be a vision that the main bad guy could've totally used to avoid his own death, but didn't because who knows why. That'll be awesome and everyone will love it."

Book movies tend to go from bad to average, or at least, those that are trying to capitalize on books that are wildly trending are. 

A perfect example of this would be the movie Eragon which . . . I can't even talk about how much I hate that movie, because I know it would turn into a huge rant.
