I agree and have noticed those short comings too. I think the best way to minimize them is to communicate well, and share ideas. I wish there was a way to organize the various sub-plots so the thing reads more like a story. But at the same time, many people add an element of 'realism' to an RP. Instead of one person making up the reactions of other characters, which could be bias, the people as a whole determine how the character react and the story flows. That also , sometimes makes the story change in unexpected, and interesting ways.

Except when the characters are perfect, boring, unrealistic, unchanging, author inserts, overpowered for the sake of coolness, etc.
