With fiery red hair and vibrant blue eyes, she stands barely reminiscent of her parents outside of her skin tone— a fact that might be clear due to the fact that she has probably dyed her hair, though that would be a bit speculative. Nathalie isn’t too tall, bearing around the 5’2” - 5’3” range with a mildly athletic build but nothing too defined. As far as blemishes and their ilk, Nathalie doesn’t have many outside of some childhood gashes and cuts that didn’t heal too great— such as healed gash on her knee from an incident on her bicycle when she was ten. As for terms of preferences for clothes, Nathalie seems to be diverse in her sense of fashion with selections ranging from jackets, sweaters, business casual, formalwear, skirts, dresses, khakis; she’s not particularly picky though she loves to mix and match if she thinks it goes well with something else.

“That’s interesting, please don’t tell me more.”

Personality
Affected emotionally by her father’s abandonment of herself and her mother when she was seven years old, Nathalie has had some rough adjustments to make up for. Partially due to her abandonment she found herself using a sense of humor as a sort of defense mechanism to shield her from the trauma of being thrown away— of which has become her defining trait of her personality. This humorous (and sometimes self-depreciative) sense of humor has been a great part of her charm and not just simply something she’s come to develop to defend herself from social and mental anxieties. However, such humor isn’t simply peppy sarcasm but can lead to annoyed side comments which due to her blunt nature can annoy others far more than her optimistic outlook. Nathalie is blunt, as aforementioned, which is due to her dislike of deceptive lies and false promises. She feels like being honest is better than covering up thoughts even if it might be a better call to tell half-truths— a double-edged sword as it is. Despite her “absolute honesty” many find her company nice enough given her positive-thinking outlook, though on a few occasions it has led her to clash with realists and cynics alike who claim that her hopefulness is ridiculous to the point of absurdity. Her grandfather also warned her that she’d need to keep herself realistic so when things went the wrong direction she wouldn’t be emotionally devastated as she had before. Nathalie is trying to currently temper her optimism, but it isn’t as easy as she’d like. She is also thirdly, quite “clingy” and “obsessive” to not only her way of life but her romantic interests. She finds it hard not to attach to things— her abandonment by her parents still acting as a shadow lingering over her. She knows it turns people away when her emotions get the best of her, but she reminds people that she can’t seem to help it and to give her mannerisms time to calm. She loves people as a whole and wants to not be as alone as she was when she was younger and her closest of friends realize this. Her father was a Police Detective and her mother was an artist and educator— both of them disappearing in her life when she was seven years old. As the story goes, Nathalie recalls little about the incident that would result in her mother’s death as it had occurred away from her eyes and ears; herself being watched by a babysitter in her childhood neighborhood by the name of Lauren Hart. Her mother had been killed in a scuffle leaving her car as she was about to return to her home, with the culprit taking off into the night. This led to her father to dive into his work and realizing his inability to watch his daughter sent her off to the only capable relative to be raised until the situation changed— Katherine Townes’ father, D.E. Townes. David Edward Townes (D.E. Townes) had his own reputation, but after the funeral of his daughter he had no issues taking his daughter in as his son-in-law attempted to find the culprit and bring him to justice. Nathalie moved upstate to a small town her grandfather had lived for several years, tempering his loneliness with the atmosphere the town gave him. D.E. was an acclaimed author, screenwriter, and a former (at that point, retired) Professor of English at the University of Michigan. It was under Nathalie’s grandfather that she would learn the power of a good story and a hopeful mind. She would become so inspired by his life and his stories that she would follow his stead and aspire to become a writer herself— a talent she manifested in middle school in the small town. She would end up going to Ashford University before gathering a bit of wanderlust; of which she began traveling with some money her grandfather had left for her. Her wanderlust ended up taking her to Dublin, Ireland— a place where she would meet her current boyfriend, Rowan Carrington, though she had originally traveled to Dublin to talk to a semi-retired novelist named Malcolm Kavanagh, a friend of her grandfather. Taking up the knowledge from Malcolm and enjoying Rowan’s company she found herself staying in Dublin for awhile making it her current home. She was considering coming home for Christmas when the Carrington’s asked Rowan for a gathering of sorts; a gathering she wasn’t sure about until a phone call with her grandfather led her to go along with Rowan.
Least favorite memory
Just one? Nathalie would love to be able to have one distressing memory to call her “worst” but unfortunately it ends up as a sort of two-way tie. There was her mother’s death when she was seven years old, or perhaps her father’s abandonment of Nathalie at… seven years old. He seems anxious and stressed, what relationship does he have with his family?” Nathalie Knox and Rowan Carrington have been in a relationship for a few months now, having been so since Nathalie arrived in Dublin to speak to Malcolm Kavanagh. Nathalie considers it an amazing happenstance that she was able to meet Rowan and connect with him. He was a bit hesitant at first, when they started “officially” dating but Nathalie didn’t consider her age or his age to be an issue. A fact she was blunt about when Rowan was having his misgivings about the situation. Once that barrier was passed they didn’t seem to have many relationship issues as they were both very similar beings given their interest in literature and kind & liberal personalities. Nathalie and Rowan also talked in detail about D.E. Townes who Rowan soon discovered was Nathalie’s grandfather on her mother’s side, a fact she doesn’t try to tell people if it comes up— but it did. Whilst Rowan knows a decent amount of Nathalie’s childhood, he hasn’t exactly exchanged the favor too much. Rowan hasn’t told Nat a whole lot about his childhood or his family, being brief when he has mentioned them; a fact Nat didn’t pry for since she believed when he was comfortable he would tell her. They spend most days talking about literature, art, and other things of the nature and Nat likes to think they have a pretty good connection. Townes (b. 1931) is an American Novelist. Townes worked alongside other authors of the time, making his start in pulp magazines and comic book publication in the 1950s much like similar authors of the science fiction genre. Throughout his career as a novelist starting in 1966 with the novel, Perfect Symmetry, D.E. Townes established his voice among science fiction novelists and as one who refused to let the stigma of the genre to be contained to pulp fiction— demanding to see recognition of science fiction to be equal to classical and gothic literature. D.E. Townes was successful in this effect, his intellectualism and skill as a writer being compared to non-pulp authors such as J.D. Salinger, John Steinbeck, Ralph Ellison, and William Faulkner. Whilst cerebral in nature like Arthur C. Clarke and others, D.E. Townes also had a preference of deconstruction of pulp tropes and had a deep political side to where he would make allusions to social and political issues disguised as science fiction conflicts. “D.E. Townes is science fantasy. Comparisons can be made to D.E. Townes as an amalgamation of J.R.R. Tolkien, Arthur C. Clarke, and William Faulkner but that is doing a disservice to all four authors. Townes has created rich science fantasy stories with social and political allusions that enriches the mind as well as weeps for the soul. There is nobody quite like D.E. Townes and unlike some of his contemporaries he continues to inspire with new work every decade; he’s never written a bad story or published a book pointlessly. If he doesn’t have something to say he doesn’t write it.” The following is selected works from his body of work, colored works have been adapted to film (yellow) or television (green):
Perfect Symmetry (1966) Film released in 1971
A cautionary tale of bigotry and hatred that follows Iaar Khek, a “wizard” who is on the run on a colonial planet after an incident upsets the colony’s main settlement to the point they blame him for something he cannot control. The main character, a detective named Eron Dox, comes into conflict when the trail leads to a government official who controls the ship. Preludes the Watergate events years later, perhaps hinting at Townes issues with government control.
Endless Infinity (1975) TV Mini-Series ran from 1980-1981
Inspired by the Vietnam War, D.E. Townes takes his audience into the Great Intergalactic War and several characters who the war effects in different ways including a space fighter pilot, a student protesting the war, a government official, the girlfriend of a soldier, and a loyal alien militant “savage”. The novel shows the brutality of war and pointlessness of political war games.
In a Flesh Aquarium (1982) TV Series ran from 2009-2014
A horrific tale of transhumanism and technology overpassing humanity. Follows the discovery of a colony that has been completely consumed by the intergalactic robotics conglomerate. The novel asks the question of “what is human” and “how far should technology go”.
Angels Fall First (1993) Film released in 2003
“How far can good fall if evil is so tempting?” is the question asked in this novel. Taking place on the Space Station IX-55, the main character is a devout and determined man to bring good to the firm that runs the space station but soon struggles as corruption tests his ability to do so. The difficulty in the world of bribes, favors, corrupt security, and immoral behavior is dangerous. A pseudo-sequel to Shadows of a Broken Past.
March of Progress (2004) Film released in 2013
A socio-political thriller that deconstructs the world of political lobbyism around two characters: a young morally upright senator and a clever female lobbyist who intends to get his vote on a new planetary law that could open up new opportunities for her company despite the ethical questions that arise.
No World Order (2015)
A continuation of the issues presented in D.E. Townes’ very first novel, Perfect Symmetry. However this story focuses on the organization that controls the wizards and how the different political factions within the order vies for determining their destiny. An analogue to political parties and their games of intrigue as well as how the world sees man (the wizards) as opinionless weapons rather than people and how they strive to silence them for utility in their political wars.
Subject to Updates
