As long as Petyr kept an ear open for cars coming down the one main road that ran past it, he could simply leave his legs on autopilot while his mind spun in an entirely different direction. To call the day he was having unnerving would be an understatement; first the morning incidents, then Nina cutting class to go do God knew what in the woods with Everett, and to cap it all off he had nearly slipped on a patch of ice he’d made without thinking about it on his way to the bus. Stress, it seemed, was even less a friend now that he was a potential walking freezer. Unfortunately, stress seemed likely to stick around. The coffee shop was crowded today, which would mean he’d have little time to think about anything once he got behind the counter. Nina was one of the people inside, he saw through the window, sitting and reading a book at a table with several other people from school. ”Hoo boy, this is going to suck…” he said to nobody as he trooped over the last crosswalk. The small bell above the door jingled as he opened it, just about everybody glanced up to see who was coming in, and everybody who looked knew who he was. Petyr tried to ignore it and wave or nod to a few people in turn as he travelled down the wall to the back room where the employees could toss their bags, but it only did so much. He hated living in a small town. Nina tapped Petyr on the shoulder and she waited for him to turn to her. ”Saw you come in. Figured you wouldn’t really wanna talk in front of everyone, bratr. But first, how was your day? Have any more uh… incidents?” ”Aside from making a deathtrap for myself out of a puddle on the sidewalk, no. Thankfully.” he responded as he turned sideways and slipped his bag into a locker, ”Especially since I’m pretty sure worrying myself sick makes it harder to keep a handle on.” ”If it makes you feel any better, it’s not just us. Apparently it was anyone who saw the eclipse last night. I mean even Tess has a power bratr.” Nina paused and bit her lip. ”I’m sure I did not make the worrying easier. Omlouvám se.” I’m sorry. Petyr closed the locker with a little more force than he intended to, resulting in a somewhat loud bang that echoed around the back room, but not enough to get over the noise of the cafe. ”Well, given that you were all but the sole source of it, I would tend to agree.” He turned to face her as he continued speaking. ”So, let’s get it out of the way then. What happened with Everett?” Nina winced a bit at the slamming of the locker and looked at Petyr. ”First off, I wasn’t planning on ditching, however, I thought he could use a friend given that tomorrow this town just wants to dredge up the fact that his parents are dead. I would have extended the same offer to Tess if she wasn’t shoving me away. Second, I mostly just went to help around the lodge. I spent most of the time cleaning up. Third, we kissed, yes, but that was it. Anything else you want to know?” Petyr closed his eyes for a moment as he took a deep breath. She wasn’t telling him everything. He couldn’t quite tell how he knew that, maybe it was just the twin thing at work, but he knew. ”Well,” he finally said, ”If that’s all it was I suppose I don’t have much ground to be upset with you.” ”You’d tell me if anything happened that might get you into trouble, right?” Nina looked guilty. ”Okay, there is one thing but you have to promise not to get upset because I didn’t even know what was going on till we got there, ok?” He tensed up for a moment and crossed his arms. He nodded his assent after a few seconds. ”Go on…” ”Everett is having a party tomorrow. And of course you know how most people around here like to party. So… we went to Jade’s uncle’s house and he arranged for some… drinks… to be delivered to the party tomorrow. I swear bratr, had I know, I wouldn’t have gone. All he said was that he wanted my help.” Nina looked nervous at this point. ”We are invited by the way, to the party.” Upon hearing her, Petyr slumped back against the locker, placed his hand on the side of his face, and exhaled slowly in disbelief. ”Oh, sestra…” The cutting class was an entirely minor thing by this point, this was something that could have landed her in serious trouble. She said she hadn’t known about it, and he believed her, but that wouldn’t have changed anything if they’d gotten caught in the act. He wanted very much to be upset with her, but there wasn’t any real reason for him to be. It was only when Nina cleared her throat politely that he noticed the room had dropped several degrees in temperature. ”Oh sakra (damn it), one second…” he said as he steered his mind toward warmer images to rescind the chill. Nina reached over and hugged her brother tightly. ”Je mi to opravdu líto bratr (I’m really sorry brother.) I made you worry so much.” Nina’s eyes were starting to tear up a bit as she kept close to her brother. He wrapped his arms around her in turn, and sighed again. ”Don’t worry about it. You’re okay, that’s all that really matters.” As he broke out of the hug to put his stupid little brown apron on, he started tapping on his hip to some rhythm nobody else could hear. ”Well,” he mused, ”I suppose we should accept that invitation. It’d probably break his country boy heart if you didn’t show up after all of that, now wouldn’t it?” ”Bratr… don’t be rude, prosím (please), for me?” Nina said, looking at Petyr. ”Alright,”he said, “I promise I won’t turn into dad from that time you snuck out to a dance and came home with Harry Davenport in middle school. Omluvte mě...” he finished as he skirted past her toward the door. If he spent any more time back there, the manager was like to come hunting for him. Stupid afternoon rush.
