I can help here. Most of what anyone means when they say "energy" is plasma. They're way different, but when you shoot a glowing white beam, it's plasma, not energy. The second interpretation (especially if it's colored) is a force of some kind (e.g. electromagnetic). If it does something special that most others don't, it's likely a force that the user is able to generate and others cannot. Forces normally don't have a visible travel path ("red runes appear on your skin") and do a variety of tasks. Finally, we have magic, which is just magic. Realistically, magic would be the capability to direct energy (the actual energy stuff), in order to make it behave in different ways. Since energy is only something that is a property of matter, magic allows you to change how that matter behaves.
