While the accuracy and suitability of the term "shankstick" could probably be debated for months, it is long established tradition for blades to be less effective when facing opponents that lack flesh and organs.  However, a well wielded katana is capable of slicing through an intact body.  It is therefore true that such weapons will work well on humanoid opponents.

I still second my Co-GM's recommendation that you incorporate some form of enchanted gear.  Whether you do this at the start or ask one of the three of us for permission to find something suitable in the ruins later on, the recommendation stands.  As he is now, Kenji will be unable to do any harm to many of the more interesting enemies ahead.
