For example, the two pearls look vastly different, as do the diamonds. And we're told Amethyst is quite the runt. And we have seen that gems can alter their appearance upon reforming; perhaps this unity of appearance is another part of homeworld culture, pushing on the idea that certain gems are all the same and thus disposable.
