I just had a friend give me the game over the holidays (Bless his soul), so I'm going to start playing it the minute it finishes downloading. FORTUNATLY nothing important happens in my courses for the first 1.5 weeks so I've got a bit of spare time.

... So tell me, guys. If I wanna get the 'authentic fallout experience', should I just run off in a random direction immediatly upon start and ignore the main quest?
