[@DigitalDemon] Honestly, I never saw how Mettaton could be a male (unless transgender counts). Mettaton's former room, the way "it" talks, the stuff in the diaries... I made "it" female for certain reasons (including for the role-play), not from any confusion. Of course this is simply from stuff I remember from watching gameplays, so there might be information I'm missing.
