We became proficient in nuclear fusion after the Manhattan Project in order to destroy Japan. Now a good portion of the world uses nuclear power facilities in order to gain energy. It's also led us to nuclear fusion, a clean source of future energy if we can learn how to contain it. What does the space program even do? I looked at NASA's website, and they don't even know what makes space investments profitable. We do nothing with space; we have the Hubble Telescope to get images, we have the ISS (that does who knows what; it's really nothing we don't have here other than low gravity, which doesn't contribute significantly. There's not much else to do with space.
