I can't speak for anyone else, but I think making a journey makes RP'ing so much easier. For me, the journey in this particular RP is of a guy who isn't "The Guy" but there isn't anyone else around to be "The Guy". My character hasn't successfully done anything as of yet. He hasn't even digivolved to the Rookie stage, even with a Diaboromon outside the hideout bunker. That tension makes you interested in how in the world is he going to overcome his obstacles when he has so little going for him. That's his journey. Even now, I'm not completely happy with it. Some ideas came to me after I started and they are a little wobbly now and confusing to lore and such, but it's still more or less the same journey.
