I've tried interest checks, and nobody really seems interested in interest checks most of the time, ironically enough.

And my plan is to simply play characters in a world which is expanded by the actions taken by our characters. I might, for example, have my character discover a giant plant, which added giant plants to the world. Effectively, we're playing people exploring a world as it's being created, although the characters themselves don't realize it.
