I think this would be some time after the original attack, maybe a year, still adjusting but this becomes his reason for running away from England and crossing the water between it and into the rest of Europe. He had kept it hidden for the most part but finally was caught after his more recent transformations had him going after livestock which made people suspicious. This mistakenly lead to his first human kill which he didn't want or mean to and terrified him so he just simply ran from all what he once had considered his life.
