In 2084 six people arrived on Mars and formed their own colony, though it was funded by governments and private corporations. When more people arrived two years later they found that they had a hard time getting along with the older colonists and, eventually, the six newer colonists moved to a mining base several kilometers away. Starting new colonies became the norm for Mars, and, eventually, the children that grew up there did the same thing. They formed what the Martians call micro-communes, groups of people, usually 3-8, sometimes families, which share the labor and resources of a small colony. Each micro-commune, or commune if it has more than 15 or 20 people, has its own rules and if you don't like your commune you can apply for acceptance in a different commune or form a new one with other, like-minded people. So, as new arrivals (any age over 18) or children born there (16-25), or people who wanted to start anew (any age over 18) that's what we did. We came together (over Martian craigslist/skype at first, then in person) and pooled our money to buy the supplies to build a new micro-commune, including various 3 meter cylindrical modules (walking platform 0.5 meters off the bottom, and supported by long rods driven into the ground), and the various bits of equipment we would need (air processors, solar panels, batteries, smelters, electrolysis equipment, etc.) The RP will start on the day that we arrive in our vehicles. I'll try to list what equipment we'll have and the different jobs that are common in a micro-commune, but if you have any ideas, feel free to make suggestions. There will be little to no fighting in this RP, maybe a thief or you a bar brawl at most, so fighter type characters aren't really needed. A fighter-hybrid could work though, like an ex-military person that is a mechanic or a cop that has other skills. [hider=Common jobs in a commune:] Mechanic: Installs new equipment and keeps the equipment running. Engineer: Manufactures new equipment and, with a mechanic's help, designs new things or improvements for things. Often works as a mechanic as well, as making new equipment isn't a full-time job for a small commune. Botanist: Works with plants, usually food, medicinal, or otherwise useful plants. Biologist: Works to keep the habitat suitable for life, and to improve its suitability. Also works with various lifeforms to make them work better together. Doctor: Sees to the health of the people, and sometimes animals, though they are expensive to get and keep. Usually a hybrid job, as only larger communes can keep them busy enough for it to be a full time job. Chemist: Works with chemicals to produce the chemicals that the group needs. Sometimes specializes in biological or another specific form of chemical. Roboticist: Builds, maintains, and programs robots and computers. Geologist: Studies the rocks and soil of Mars and looks for natural resources. Usually in charge of mining. Worker: Does manual labor around the commune, including driving heavy equipment to move heavy goods. Builder: Designs and builds the various modules, domes, or other structures to expand the commune's pressurized areas. Maid: Cleans and cooks for the commune. Usually only found in larger communes. Housemate: A position that arose due to the scarcity of women on Mars, they are like a house wife/husband, but without a marriage, and their "marital duties" are usually extended to multiple people, if not everyone in the commune. Usually a woman, and they are usually surgically sterilized and very "open" sexually, for obvious reasons. Usually a transitional job or a hybrid job while they learn a more useful job.
