[@Loony] Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's what they were.  Also I just remembered this other thing in Florida from my childhood.  There's this guy there who just sits in the street with a bunch of animals during the day, and you can pay him to put a bird on your head and take your picture with it.  It was really fun but looking back on it I really hope he wasn't abusing that bird.  Do you think that one would be willing to pose for photos if you trained it well enough?
