To put it bluntly, Germ wasn't in the best situation. To spare any nasty details they had to become a "Person of the Night" to make ends meet, a profession Germ was not very happy doing. But like a soldier they pushed on, not willing to give up like the others fate dealt a crappy hand to. All was tolerable until Death came knocking, one of those wrong place, wrong time deals. Two of the various local gangs were having a turf war and a stray bullet just happened to find it's way into a new home, Germs chest. And so they died, a nasty hand in fates little deck of cards. But, all is not lost.
