Background "The Universe, so far as we can observe it, is a wonderful and immense engine; its extent, its order, its beauty, its cruelty, makes it alike impressive." — George Santayana, The Life of Reason, 1916. One year before the Prothean relics were discovered on Mars, Marco Castillo was born in the capital of the Philippines. His father, Malakai Castillo, had been in the Philippine Navy for fifteen years as a commander. The Castillo's military service begun during the Philippine Revolution, when people of the island fought against Kingdom of Spain for freedom. They tried to fight towards independence until the Philippine-American War began and ended with defeat. Then, they fought in World War II against the Empire of Japan as they were taking over all of Asia. After World War II ended and the country was free from Japanese control, the Castillo family decided to keep the long history of military service going. Life had been planned for Marco and his other siblings (three sisters and five brothers) until the relics were discovered, proving that humanity wasn't alone. The Castillo family were very religious Catholics among with most of the Philippines. Even, the Pope declined the findings and said that it was "propaganda against all religion". Despite their disagreements, Malakai and his two sons joined the Systems Alliance as soon as it formed. Because they had joined the Alliance, they moved all the way from Manila to Madrid. The family had a hard time adjusting to life in a new place, while the father signed to be in the 5th Exploration Fleet and the two sons joined the Colonial Garrison Unit. Soon enough, Malakai left Earth to help out in the newly massive military fleet to defend the expanding territory and when one of the first colonies was established, the two sons left as well. Leaving the mother to raise her children alone. The family decided to stay at Earth, still doubtful of alien life until the First Contact War happened with the attack on Shanxi. At the time, Malakai was with the Second Fleet under Admiral Kastanie Drescher and saw the turian fleet for the first time as they launched a powerful counteroffensive. The news soon spread of the attack and the new aliens, causing fear among the Castillo. At the age of nine, Marco overheard his siblings and parents talking about the First Contact War and the Citadel. Later on the months, his father came back to Earth for a while and discussed plans for the future of the family. Most of the family members hated turians for what they did to Shanxi; however, the young Marco didn't understand what really was happening besides the fact that they met other species. As he was getting older, he got more interested in history of humanity and the other species as he learned about them in school. Despite his thirst for knowledge, his family banned anything that could "corrupt the minds and our religion" and had connections beyond Earth. Marco started to avoid the rules and saw pictures of the Citadel and other planets, read about the history of the turians, and heard rumors about the beautiful asari. The relationship between his family was getting worst until he was found kissing another boy, causing him to come out as gay. His father came back to Earth to question Marco's activities among with most of the family. After a heated argument, he was punished by a slap to his face and was sent to his room. He sent a message to his two sisters, Joanna and Ciara, to get him out of Earth as soon as possible. After a week of physical and emotional abuse, his sisters helped Marco escape for his abusive family and headed from the Citadel. Life at the Citadel was a whole lot different than life at Earth—even traveling in space was difficult for Marco. But, he was happy to be away from his family and being independent in this new place. At first, he wanted to be C-Sec like his sister, Ciara; however, they only accepted the best and she was a respected cop back at Earth. But, she taught Marco how to fire a gun and close combat. He became a cook at his other sister's restaurant, mastering his skills in cooking foods from different species. But, at the age of twenty, he wanted to do something else other than become a cook and thought back to the Alliance. That was when he decided to join the Systems Alliance in 2168 CE. For eight years, he traveled all over the galaxy to serve for the Alliance until he retired and returned to the Citadel to run the restaurant with his sister. Until he saw a classified for a job aboard a ship, then he left the restaurant, spent his credits on gears, and headed to the location of the ship.
