Hmmm well, I think perhaps something to do with the idea of change rather than changing her body itself. Maybe instead of turning her body into animals, maybe creating and communicating with them. That'd be a bit more Madoka like, though it may be very close to a Witch making familiars. Could be very interesting if executed well.
