I forgot to mention that the continents wander around but periodically align with one central, harsh, and unforgiving landmass that hosts the holy site, and at that point all the nations simultaneously invade in search of the orbs of power or whatever.

Your cult should participate in the bloodbath by collecting said orbs. Only they then try to use said orbs to destroy the very holy site that makes the orbs. :lol
