Technically he died and Reincarnated due to a spell he crafted to simulate Ascension without actually ascending. Not quite an immortal, but with each Cycle of life and death more of his blood becomes Seraphim, increasing his purity over the many deaths he had. Of course

(Greater Astromancy) Kael's Cosmic Invocation: An Nigh-Impossible-level spell cast once per lifetime. Upon death, the caster may simply wander the world as a cosmic spirit for one day before returning in a new body somewhere in  in a cycle of rebirth with all the knowledge and abilities one had in one's past life, although the form one may not completely resemble one's original body. The spell must be recast upon rebirth to take into effect once more, leaving the caster vulnerable to death immediately after rebirth.
