That was actually a half-lie, as it was not actually a book but [url=https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5398503/1/Embers]this[/url].

I have never seen and am not a fan of Avatar, but this was recommended to me as a story that deconstructs and extrapolates upon aspects and details of the setting in a way that is significantly more [i]decompressed[/i]. I get the impression it it probably hit or miss for some people.
