Re Minecraft: I had spent quite a long while not playing Minecraft, but then I recently got back into it about a couple of weeks ago as I saw some inspiration for building and creations. I play vanilla. If I want the complicated mechanics found in modpacks like FTB, I can go play other games which focus on such elements. Plus, vanilla is always up-to-date, performs relatively smoothly and forms a coherent, unified whole. And about Microsoft, if you think about it logically, they spent 2 billion dollars on Minecraft. They would not do so if they couldn't find a way to get more than 2 billion dollars out of it. That is no trivial amount of money, even for Microsoft, so they would have to work hard for it, which should manifest as improvements and positive change.
