As for motivation for people sticking around, it's a combination of suspension of belief and the fact that they still have the jobs they were hired to do, regardless of if the captain is dead. Besides, the game outlined how awful the conditions were beforehand; it's assumed any character who didn't bail when confronted with the reality of the situation was willing to tolerate the conditions.
