There are several reapers and soul transporters and what not. They need to deliver the souls to the afterlife, which is more of whole place that is interpreted differently in every religion. 

So, no, they need to be picked up and delivered to be able to pass to the afterlife, where they can either reincarnate or just kind of lull around for eternity.
